Pain Management: Know Your Treatment Options

Pain may be defined as an unpleasant sensation caused due to an illness or injury. Pain is experienced by all human beings irrespective of their age or gender. However, the nature of the pain experienced by people may vary according to their tolerance, manner of pain, or past experience with pain. The kind of pain experienced by the elderly is usually that caused by joint related or back problems. Pain can be categorised into a variety of forms, for instance, chronic pain, nerve pain, psychogenic pain, musculoskeletal pain chronic muscle pain, abdominal pain, joint pain, shingles pain and central pain syndrome.

DOES PAIN VARY FROM PERSON TO PERSON?

Do you wonder why you feel greater or lesser pain compared to your neighbour? There must be a reason why the same kind of fever affects you more severely than it might to the other recipients. Indeed researchers have found that brain perceives pain according to the emotional and psychological conditions of the patient. There are a plethora of ways to deal with chronic pain. Doctors suggest that patients be treated with a combined physical and psychological method. Medication should not be a definite constricted choice between pain and a particular type of treatment, but both the physical therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy are to be employed in the treatment in a combined manner.

There are a number of alternative methods to deal with pain, other than opioids and narcotics. TENS(Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), meditation( breathing techniques), visual imagery (peaceful sceneries), relaxation techniques, biofeedback heat and cold therapy, manipulation and massage, etc. are some of the most popular and effective methods recommended by doctors.

IMPORTANCE OF THE RIGHT TREATMENT

During the physical therapy, it is important to keep in mind that exercise is done in the correct way. A physical therapist can recommend the precise exercise for the patient. In absence of the correct exercise, the patient may suffer further. With the right exercise, the tolerance and the willpower to endure the pain improves.

PAIN AND WHAT DOES IT SIGNIFY?

It is unwise to ignore pain. Chronic pain if ignored may develop into fatal consequences. Therefore, it is recommended that patients contact their doctors if they feel that the pain is disturbing their normal ability to function or obstructing their day to day activities.
